Stop Sounding Like a Bot: How to Inject "Soul" Back Into Your Resume

We’ve all been there. You’re staring at a blank screen, so you ask an AI to "write a professional summary for a Marketing Manager." Two seconds later, it spits out a paragraph filled with words like leveraging, synergistic, passionate, and results-oriented.

It sounds professional, sure. But it doesn’t sound like you.

In a world where recruiters are being flooded with AI-generated applications, the resumes that actually get noticed aren't the ones with the most "keywords"—they’re the ones that feel like they were written by a living, breathing human being.

1. Kill the "Corporate Speak"

If you wouldn’t say a sentence out loud to a colleague, don’t put it on your resume.

  • The Bot says: "I am a highly motivated professional with a proven track record of facilitating cross-functional collaboration."

  • The Human says: "I’m at my best when I’m bringing different teams together to solve a complex problem."

2. Focus on the "How" and "Why," Not Just the "What"

AI is great at listing tasks, but it’s terrible at capturing your unique approach. Instead of just listing your duties, tell the story of your impact. What’s the "soul" of your work? Do you mentor others because you love seeing people grow? Do you organize messy Data because you crave clarity? That’s the "real you" that a hiring manager wants to meet.

3. Ditch the Generic Adjectives

Words like innovative and dynamic have lost all meaning. If you’re innovative, describe a time you fixed a broken process. If you’re a leader, talk about how you supported your team during a tough transition. Specific stories beat generic adjectives every single time.

4. The "Read Aloud" Test

This is the simplest way to humanize your resume: Read it out loud. If you find yourself tripping over stiff phrasing or losing your breath in a 40-word sentence, simplify it.

The Bottom Line: AI is a tool, but it isn’t a substitute for your voice. Your resume shouldn't just prove you can do the job—it should make a recruiter want to have a conversation with you.
